Cruise deals: how to read the fine print before you book

What Norwegian, Carnival and Royal Caribbean's own pages said about their offers in November 2026, and what CruiseDirect's price match does and doesn't cover.

Sunrise over the sea from the upper deck of a cruise ship in the Caribbean

Norwegian's "50% Off All Cruises" sale shows why the terms matter more than the headline. NCL's promotion terms limited it to bookings made from November 5 to November 11, 2026, and add that the "original" prices behind a savings claim "may not have been in effect during the past 90 days." A headline percentage tells you what a seller is advertising. It doesn't tell you what the sailing cost last month.

CruiseDirect is an online cruise agency that sells sailings from many cruise lines. Its listings show prices per person with taxes and fees included.

Free at Sea: the extras, and the bill that comes with them

Norwegian publishes the terms of its Free at Sea bundle. Its FAQ lists unlimited drinks for every guest in the stateroom who is 21 or over, specialty dining for a number of nights set by the sailing's length, 150 minutes of Wi-Fi per guest, and a $50 credit toward shore excursions for the first guest. It also tells you to prepay the gratuities.

Norwegian's service charge page prices that at $20.00 per person per day up to Club Balcony Suite and $25.00 in The Haven and suites, for guests 3 and older. At the $20.00 rate, two people prepay $280 over seven days. The package's components "have no monetary value, are non-refundable and non-transferable."

Early Saver and other deposit deals

Under Carnival's cancellation policy, the Early Saver deposit is non-refundable. Cancel before final payment and you get a future cruise credit worth the deposit minus $50 per person, which has to be used on a new booking within 12 months. Royal Caribbean's refund page describes fares built the same way. If you cancel a non-refundable deposit fare, the line keeps the full deposit, and a change to the booking carries a fee.

When the sales come around

Royal Caribbean's wave season guide calls January through March the industry's peak booking period and says deals can start as early as November. Its list of sweeteners: drink packages, free Wi-Fi, gratuities, and bonuses on third or fourth guests. On November 7, 2026, CruiseDirect's Black Friday page headlined eight offers, from "50% Off All Cruises + Up to $1,500 Visa Gift Card & More" to "Up to $1,500 On Board Credit & More."

Sailings that are close in have their own rules on payment and refunds. Carnival's schedule says it charges 100% of the total fare from 14 days before departure. Our last-minute cruises guide sets out the rest.

What a price match covers

CruiseDirect's price guarantee is narrower than its name. You have to call within 24 hours of booking. The lower fare must be for the same ship, sailing date and cabin category, advertised to the public on a US website before your final payment date. A rate you got by phone or email doesn't count, and screenshots aren't accepted.

The match covers the cruise fare including port charges. The terms exclude onboard credit, gift cards, cash back, air, insurance and transfers, and say taxes and fees are not included. If your booking came with a promotion, a match may cost you the promotion, and bookings inside a line's penalty period aren't eligible at all. A separate promise is to "work to readjust" your rate if the fare drops before final payment, though some lines don't allow it on restricted fares such as flash fares and one-day sales.

Add what the headline leaves out

The daily gratuity comes on top of the fare. As listed in November 2026, Royal Caribbean adds $18.50 per guest per day ($21.00 in suites), Carnival $17.00 ($19.00 in suites), Norwegian $20.00 ($25.00 in The Haven and suites) and Princess $18.00 ($20.00 in suites). Our cruise cost guide adds drinks and Wi-Fi and works out a week for two.

Driving to the port adds its parking charge, billed by the day. In November 2026 Port Canaveral's rates page listed $20.00 plus tax, counting both the day you arrive and the day you leave. PortMiami listed $28 a day for overnight parking in Garages C, D, F and G. Port Everglades caps parking at $25 a day and takes no reservations.

Whether taxes are in the fare depends on the seller. NCL's terms say they're included for its US and Canada office but additional at its Asia, Brazil and LATAM offices, and CruiseDirect's listings show prices per person with taxes and fees included. Two offers compare fairly only when both sides count taxes the same way.

Antarctica is sold by a different set of lines. On CruiseDirect's Antarctica page on November 7, 2026, Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian each showed no sailings, and the 150 that were listed came from seven other lines, HX Expeditions leading with 60. Our Antarctica guide explains how those trips differ.

Frequently asked questions

When is wave season?

Royal Caribbean describes wave season as the cruise industry's peak booking period, usually January through March, with deals that can start as early as November. It lists drink packages, free Wi-Fi, gratuities and bonuses for third and fourth guests among the offers.

Is Norwegian's Free at Sea package free?

The fare comes with the extras, but NCL's FAQ says to prepay the gratuities. Its service charge was $20.00 per person per day up to Club Balcony Suite as of November 2026, and NCL's terms say the package's components have no monetary value and can't be refunded.

Does CruiseDirect's price match cover onboard credit or a gift card?

No. Its terms limit a match to the cruise fare including port charges, and list onboard credit, gift cards, cash back, air, insurance and transfers as not eligible. You have to call within 24 hours of booking.

Can I cancel a deal fare for a refund?

Carnival's Early Saver deposit is non-refundable, though cancelling before final payment earns a future cruise credit of the deposit less $50 per person. Royal Caribbean keeps the full deposit on its non-refundable deposit fares, according to its refund page.

Does booking through CruiseDirect change the cancellation penalty?

For Carnival, CruiseDirect's own cancellation page repeats the line's schedule, ending at 100% of the total fare from 14 days before sailing.
