CRUISES

Cheap cruises: how to pay less without spoiling the trip

The fare is only part of the bill. The daily gratuity, parking, drink and Wi-Fi charges are what a shorter or closer-to-home cruise cuts, and the lines and ports publish every rate.

A cruise ship docked at PortMiami on a sunny day

The fare is one line of a cruise bill. Four others run by the day, and they are the ones a cheap cruise can shrink: the gratuity, parking, Wi-Fi and drinks. As listed in November 2026, Royal Caribbean adds $18.50 per guest per day ($21.00 in suites), Carnival $17.00 ($19.00), Norwegian $20.00 ($25.00) and Princess $18.00 ($20.00). For two adults, each extra day adds $34 on Carnival, $36 on Princess, $37 on Royal Caribbean and $40 on Norwegian.

Cabin grade barely changes those charges

The same rates apply from the cheapest cabin up. Royal Caribbean charges one figure in every non-suite room, Carnival in every standard stateroom, and Norwegian up to Club Balcony Suite. Princess's crew appreciation page lists $19.00 for mini-suites, cabanas and the Reserve Collection, against $18.00 elsewhere. So choosing an interior cabin cuts the fare and leaves the daily charges where they were. Princess's interior stateroom page says these rooms sit inside the ship without windows and run roughly 136 to 162 square feet. Royal Caribbean's room FAQ says every room, interior included, has a TV, phone, private bath, shower, vanity and hair dryer.

Fewer days, fewer charges

The shortest sailings are a small market. On CruiseDirect's 1 and 2 night page on November 7, 2026, there were 67 cruises: MSC 31, Royal Caribbean 13, Cunard 7, Costa 6, Carnival 4, and two each for Holland America, Norwegian and Princess. For sailings closer to the date, its last-minute page is the other place to compare, and our last-minute guide covers the refund rules that come with them.

Driving instead of flying

Parking is a daily charge, but it's one person's car against everyone's airfare. Port Canaveral's parking rates page listed $20.00 a day plus tax in November 2026 and counts both the arrival and departure days: $100 plus tax for a four-night cruise, $160 for seven nights. PortMiami charged $28 a day in Garages C, D, F and G and $35 in Garage B, which serves Norwegian, and its parking page says debit cards aren't accepted. Port Everglades' parking page sets a $25 daily maximum and says it takes no reservations or prepayment. Galveston has no posted flat rate. Its parking guide says to prepay online, that the price depends on the lot and the cruise length, and that cash isn't accepted.

Flying instead adds a ride from the airport to the pier, and our airport transfers guide explains how to choose one. For the ports themselves, see cruises from Florida and cruises from Galveston.

Drinks, Wi-Fi and tours

Carnival includes non-bottled water, lemonade, unsweetened iced tea, hot chocolate and non-specialty coffee and tea in the main dining room and around the clock at the Lido. Packages add a rule. Carnival's help page listed its CHEERS package at $83.94 per person per day bought before sailing, and every adult in the stateroom has to buy it, so two adults pay $167.88 a day. Royal Caribbean's beverage package FAQ says its Deluxe package must be bought for every guest of drinking age in the stateroom.

Carnival priced its Social Wi-Fi plan at $20.40 a day bought ahead and $25.00 on board, and a plan bought ahead has to cover the whole cruise. Its help page warns that satellite speeds vary with location and time of day, and says to turn on airplane mode to avoid carrier roaming fees. Our eSIM guide covers a local data plan, which only matters in port, since the ship's own Wi-Fi is a separate network.

Royal Caribbean's shore excursion FAQ says the ship waits for a delayed tour booked through the line, and arranges your return at no cost if it can't wait. It won't wait for guests touring on their own.

What a low fare locks in

Carnival's Early Saver deposit is non-refundable, with a credit of the deposit minus $50 per person if you cancel before final payment. Royal Caribbean's refund page says the full deposit is held as the penalty on its non-refundable deposit fares. Carnival's cancellation schedule also reaches 100% of the fare at 14 days before sailing. If you book a deposit fare, read what travel insurance covers before final payment, and note that the National Hurricane Center dates the Atlantic hurricane season from June 1 to November 30. Our Caribbean cruise guide covers those itineraries.

Frequently asked questions

Does an interior cabin cost less in gratuities?

No. As listed in November 2026, Royal Caribbean charges the same $18.50 per guest per day in every non-suite cabin, Carnival $17.00 in all standard staterooms and Norwegian $20.00 up to Club Balcony Suite. Only suites cost more.

How much is parking at Port Canaveral?

$20.00 a day plus tax in November 2026, counting both the day you arrive and the day you leave. A four-night cruise is five days, or $100 plus tax.

Is the cheapest cruise a one- or two-night sailing?

It can be, because it carries the fewest days of daily charges, but the choice is narrow. On CruiseDirect's 1 and 2 night page on November 7, 2026, MSC had 31 of the 67 sailings and Royal Caribbean 13, with Carnival, Norwegian and Princess far behind.

Do I have to buy the drink package for my whole cabin?

On Carnival and Royal Caribbean, yes: everyone of drinking age in the stateroom has to buy it. Carnival's package was $83.94 per person per day bought before the cruise.

Should I buy insurance for a cheap cruise?

Carnival's Early Saver deposit isn't refundable, and Carnival's schedule charges 100% of the fare from 14 days before sailing. Our travel insurance guide covers what a plan pays when you cancel.
