Last-minute cruises: the rules that change inside final payment

Inside a line's final payment date the deposit stage is over and the refund schedule is already running. Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian and Princess each set that date differently.

Cruise ships docked at Port Everglades in Florida under a cloudy sky

No cruise line defines "last minute." Each one does publish a date after which the booking behaves differently: final payment. As listed in November 2026, Royal Caribbean's payment page sets it 75 days before sailing for 1 to 4 night cruises and 90 days for 5 to 9 nights. Carnival's policy charges nothing to cancel until 76 days out on cruises of 5 days or less and 91 days on longer ones, and CruiseDirect's summary of that policy gives the same two dates for final payment. Norwegian sets 120 days at every length. Princess sets 120 days for cruises up to 44 days booked on or after September 2, 2026; before that it was 90 days for cruises of 1 to 13 days.

A booking made inside that date skips the deposit stage altogether. Norwegian's FAQ puts it plainly: payment is required at booking, and only cruises outside 120 days can be held with a deposit.

What a refund looks like by then

Royal Caribbean's refund page charges 100% of the price at 30 days or less and 75% from 60 to 31 days, and the schedule for bookings made on or after October 11, 2026 ends with the same two steps. Carnival charges 100% of the total fare at 14 days or less, and from 29 to 15 days it charges the greater of the deposit or 75% of the fare. It refunds government taxes and fees and prepaid gratuities.

Norwegian charges 100% at 30 days or less in Club Balcony Suites and every category below them. In The Haven, other suites and Garden Villas it reaches 100% at 60 days or less. Princess also reaches 100% of all items at 60 days or less, on cruises up to 44 days booked since September 2, 2026, so a booking made 59 days out is already at the top step.

Insurance has a deadline too. Princess sells its Vacation Protection plans at booking or until final payment, so a late booking leaves no later moment to buy one. Our travel insurance guide covers what a plan pays when you cancel.

Documents you can't fix in a week

For a round trip that stays in the Western Hemisphere and starts and ends at the same US port, CBP's FAQ lets US citizens show a government photo ID plus proof of citizenship, and notes you may still need a passport for the countries the ship visits. The lines then add their own rules. Royal Caribbean's FAQ wants an original state-certified birth certificate with no photocopies. Carnival's help center accepts a clear printed copy. On photo ID, Royal Caribbean's FAQ exempts guests 15 and under, while Carnival's help page asks for it from age 16.

A passport book is required on one-way sailings, on cruises with international flights and at stops in Martinique, Panama or Colombia, according to Royal Caribbean's passport guide. Royal Caribbean wants the passport valid for six months after the cruise ends, and so does Carnival's help page. Read the ID rules before you pay for the cruise, because the refund schedule above won't cover a document problem.

Getting to the ship

On sailing day, Royal Caribbean's check-in FAQ sets a cutoff of 90 minutes before departure, and a late arrival isn't allowed to sail. Carnival wants online check-in done by midnight Eastern the night before, stops taking checked bags two hours before sailing, and sends anyone who booked within 24 hours of departure through a secondary screening. A missed ship isn't refunded, since Carnival's policy gives no refunds for no-shows. Under Royal Caribbean's missed-boarding policy, you pay to reach the next port yourself unless its travel protection covers the delay. The same FAQ says many guests find it easiest to arrive a day before sailing and stay in a hotel.

Norwegian sets a day-before rule for flights bought through the line. Its terms say that since January 26, 2026, flights bought through the line must land at least a day before sailing. If you're flying on your own, read our guides to layovers and flight delay rights, and book the flight that gets you in the night before.

Where the sailings are

On November 7, 2026, CruiseDirect's last-minute page counted 4,373 cruises. Its line filter showed MSC with 760, Royal Caribbean with 486, Carnival with 389, Norwegian with 269 and Princess with 196. By departure port, Miami led with 459, then Fort Lauderdale with 370, Port Canaveral with 318 and Galveston with 145. Alaska showed none, and Royal Caribbean's Alaska guide puts the best months for Alaska cruising at May to September. The port pages are here: Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral and Galveston. CruiseDirect also runs a Royal Caribbean-only last-minute page.

Two cabin and promotion details

On sailings from North America, Royal Caribbean's age policy won't assign anyone under 21 to a stateroom without an adult 21 or older in it. One exception is a cabin that connects to the parents', adjoins it or sits directly across the hall, and the policy says to check the deck plan to see how the doors open.

Norwegian's promotion terms say Free at Sea choices must be selected at least 24 hours before sailing, and a booking made within 24 hours of departure can choose at the time of booking. CruiseDirect's price match won't help here, since its terms exclude bookings made inside the penalty period. For the budget side, see how much a cruise costs, and for a cheaper fare in general, cheap cruises and cruise deals. A first cruise has its own checklist in the first-time guide.

Frequently asked questions

How close to sailing is last minute?

No line defines it, but each has a final payment date. As listed in November 2026: Royal Caribbean 75 days before sailing for 1 to 4 night cruises and 90 days for 5 to 9 nights, Carnival 76 days for cruises of 5 days or less and 91 days for 6 days or more, Norwegian 120 days, and Princess 120 days for cruises up to 44 days booked since September 2, 2026.

Can I get a refund on a last-minute booking?

Royal Caribbean charges 100% of the fare at 30 days or less before sailing, and so does Norwegian up to Club Balcony Suite (its suites reach 100% at 60 days). Carnival does at 14 days or less, and Princess at 60 days or less on cruises up to 44 days booked since September 2, 2026, so a late booking gets little back. Royal Caribbean and Carnival both say taxes and fees are refunded.

Do I need a passport for a round-trip cruise from a US port?

Not on a closed-loop cruise. CBP lets US citizens show a government photo ID and proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate, but each line sets its own paperwork rules, and Royal Caribbean requires passport books for one-way sailings and for stops in Martinique, Panama or Colombia.

What happens if I miss the ship at the port?

Royal Caribbean's FAQ says you pay your own way to the ship's next port unless its Travel Protection Program covers the delay. Royal Caribbean also won't let guests board after the check-in cutoff, 90 minutes before sailing.

Does CruiseDirect's price match apply to a last-minute booking?

Not inside a line's penalty period. CruiseDirect's guarantee terms say bookings made within the penalty period are not valid for the match.
