Escorted and guided tours: how to choose a group trip that suits you
Operators' own pages show group sizes from an average of 10 to an average of 45, single supplements from none to $840, and tips that are included or extra.
In November 2026, Rick Steves' website listed its seven-day Best of London tour at $3,195 to $3,645 a person, plus air, across its 2027 departures. That covers six hotel nights, all breakfasts, half the dinners, at least 18 group sightseeing events, a train day trip to Windsor Castle and the tips for guides. Drinks and sightseeing in your free time are yours to pay for.
Evan Evans sells its Cotswolds day from London as a small-group tour, but the page says only "luxury small group vehicle" and gives no number.
Group size changes the trip
The published numbers run from an average of 10 travelers to an average of 45. On its tour page, Rick Steves puts groups at 24 to 28 people and calls that half the size of most tour groups. G Adventures' FAQ says to expect up to 15 travelers, with an average of 10. Trafalgar's Best of Britain lists an average of 45.
The 14-day Best of England from Rick Steves started at $5,595 a person plus air for 2027. In November 2026, Trafalgar's 14-day Best of Britain, which also covers Scotland, showed a Black Friday price from $3,932, marked down from $4,625. Meals differ too: Trafalgar lists 13 breakfasts, 1 lunch and 5 dinners, against all breakfasts and half the dinners at Rick Steves.
What the price includes
In its tour conditions, Rick Steves puts the tips for guides, local guides and drivers in the price. Tauck's FAQ says its land journeys include gratuities for local guides, luggage handling, bellmen, doormen and dining room servers. The Tour Director's gratuity is not included.
Traveling solo
Rick Steves guarantees a solo traveler a private room for an extra fee, the single supplement, and sells a limited number of them on each departure. The London tour's supplement is $420, so one person on a $3,195 departure pays $3,615. The 14-day England tour's is $840. G Adventures works the other way. Most of its trips have no single supplement, and a solo traveler shares a twin room with someone of the same sex. Some trips offer an optional "My Own Room" at a price that varies by trip.
If you cancel, or the operator fails
Rick Steves takes a $400 deposit per person and refunds it in full if you cancel within 30 days of paying. If you sign up less than 67 days before departure, you pay the whole price at once, and it becomes nonrefundable 7 days after you book. Final payment is due 60 days before departure, and from that date payments are nonrefundable except for a "Refundable Event," a medical or family emergency as the conditions define it. Cancel for one 31 to 60 days before departure and the refund is "100 percent of your original tour price minus your deposit." For 1 to 30 days, it is "50 percent of your original tour price minus your deposit." The conditions add that this "is not insurance" and is no substitute for travel and health insurance. Our travel insurance guide covers that.
A tour company going bust is a separate risk. The USTOA Travelers Assistance Program reimburses lost tour payments or deposits when an Active Member goes bankrupt, becomes insolvent or ceases business. The program's $1 million security is an aggregate cap for the member, so travelers share it, and some brands share one security under their corporate owner. Claims are due within 90 days of the failure, voluntary cancellations aren't covered and Associate Members aren't included.
London and Britain: guided tours and day trips
Day 6 of the Rick Steves tour is the one day out of town. The group takes the train to Windsor Castle and spends the morning in the castle and St. George's Chapel, and the afternoon is free. Earlier in the week, day 1 ends with a panoramic bus tour and a welcome dinner. Day 2 begins with a Tube orientation, day 3 with the opening ceremony at the Tower of London, and day 4 takes in Westminster and the Churchill War Rooms.
The coach version of Windsor is bigger. In November 2026, Evan Evans listed Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and Bath as one 11-hour day: 8:00 a.m. from Victoria Coach Station, back about 7:30 p.m., from £174 an adult with all three entry tickets and no lunch. The listing gives no minutes per stop, so ask before you book, and it warns that viewing at Windsor Castle is restricted on Sundays.
You can do two of those stops without the coach: Windsor and Stonehenge. The Royal Collection Trust's Windsor Castle page listed adult tickets at £32 in advance and £36 on the day for 2026. It also says authorized Blue Badge Guides may guide in the castle precincts but not inside the castle, so even a private Blue Badge guide can't lead you through the rooms. For Stonehenge, English Heritage's travel page gives about 1h30m by train from London Waterloo to Salisbury, then a 12-mile taxi or the Stonehenge Tour bus, which leaves the station forecourt hourly. Its tickets are valid all day, and booking online by midnight the day before earns a discount.
The small-group option runs to the Cotswolds. Evan Evans' Villages of the Cotswolds runs 10 hours, 8:30 a.m. from its Vauxhall Bridge Road office to about 7 p.m., from £129, lunch not included, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before the day of departure.
For longer trips, Rick Steves' 14-day England tour runs from Bath to London through Avebury, Oxford, the Cotswolds, Caernarfon Castle, Snowdonia, the Lake District, Hadrian's Wall and York, with at least 26 group sightseeing events. Trafalgar's 14-day Britain tour routes through Exeter, Cardiff, Liverpool, Glasgow, the Highlands, the Isle of Skye and Edinburgh.
Rick Steves says its tours don't include airfare, that flights and transfers are up to you, and that you should arrive a day or two early. Day 1 starts at 3 p.m. at a hotel in central London, and the ride in from Heathrow or Gatwick is yours to arrange; our airport transfers guide covers when a pre-booked transfer is worth paying for. After the Tube orientation the tour expects you to find your own way around the city. If you use a Europe eSIM for maps, check that the United Kingdom is on its country list.
Between a tour and your own plan
Rick Steves sells a middle option: an unguided My Way England trip, 10 nights from $3,995 plus air on its 2027 dates. A group of 30 to 32 shares one bus and a tour manager coordinates transport and hotels, but lunches, dinners, admissions and sightseeing are your own.
Want one guided day instead of a whole tour? The tours and tickets guide covers skip-the-line and guided options. Entry tickets bundled by city are in the city passes guide, and our Rome and Paris guides are written for a first visit.
Frequently asked questions
What is an escorted tour?
A multi-day trip with a tour director or guide who travels with the group. For example, Rick Steves' Best of London in 7 Days includes six hotel nights, all breakfasts, half the dinners and at least 18 group sightseeing events, with flights extra.
What is a single supplement?
A fee that guarantees a solo traveler a private room. At Rick Steves it is $420 on the 7-day London tour and $840 on the 14-day England tour. G Adventures says most of its trips have none, and that solo travelers share a twin room with someone of the same sex.
Is a small-group tour better than a coach tour?
A small-group label can hide the number: Evan Evans' Cotswolds small-group listing gives none. Where operators do publish one, G Adventures averages 10 travelers, Rick Steves puts its groups at 24 to 28 and Trafalgar's Best of Britain averages 45.
Can I see London on a day tour?
Yes. In November 2026, Evan Evans listed an 11-hour Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and Bath day from £174 and a 10-hour Cotswolds small-group day from £129. Lunch is extra on both, and both run from morning to early evening.
Can I cancel an escorted tour?
At Rick Steves, you get the $400 deposit back if you cancel within 30 days of paying it; after that it is kept. From the final payment date, 60 days out, a refund comes only for a covered medical or family emergency, and it leaves out the deposit. For day trips, Evan Evans' Cotswolds listing allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before the day of departure.
