Tanzania safari itineraries: 28 trips compared by length and price

Go2Africa's 28 Tanzania itineraries, cheapest first, sorted by the part of the country they cover, with the Serengeti's seasons and airstrips and the entry insurance Tanzania added on October 1, 2026.

Tanzania's 28 safaris in Go2Africa's feed, downloaded November 5, 2026, have an odd gap in their prices. Three start under $6,000, and the next one up is $8,500. Those three are short northern trips of 7 to 10 days, and all three include the Ngorongoro Crater. Above the gap sit the southern and western parks, the Zanzibar add-ons and the luxury Serengeti trips.

The three cheap trips, and what the jump buys

Tanzania's Best Value Migration Safari is the floor: 7 days for $4,400. The 8-day Best-Price Migration, Manyara & Karatu trip is $4,500, and Good Value Migration & Beach stretches to 10 days for $5,400. If the classic northern parks are all you want, start there.

Go2Africa's own pages price all three higher. On November 7, 2026, the Best Value Migration Safari page showed $5,040 to $6,140 per person sharing and the Best-Price page $4,670 to $5,430. Migration & Beach showed $6,440 to $7,780, above the $6,000 line, and all three listed their rates for 2027 travel dates.

The first trip past the gap, at $8,500, is a different kind of holiday. Tanzania's Safari & Chimps spends 8 days between the Serengeti and Lake Tanganyika in the west. Half of the 28 start at $10,800 or less, and the Tanzania Classic Northern Circuit, the plain version of the trip most people picture, costs $10,100 for 10 days.

North, south or west

Most trips stay in the north. Tanzania National Parks describes Tarangire as famous for big elephant herds and baobabs and Lake Manyara for tree-climbing lions and a flamingo-lined alkaline lake. UNESCO calls the Ngorongoro Crater the world's largest caldera.

In the south, Nyerere is the former Selous Game Reserve, and Ruaha, in TANAPA's words, is known for large lion and elephant populations. The 9-day Nyerere & Ruaha Adventure begins in Dar es Salaam and starts at $9,400; Secret Serengeti, Ruaha & Nyerere adds the north for 11 days at $14,800.

Western trips are built around chimpanzees. TANAPA lists Mahale for chimp tracking on the shore of Lake Tanganyika and Katavi as remote country with huge numbers of hippos and crocodiles. Western Tanzania Fly-In Katavi & Mahale is 9 days for $9,980, and Tanzania Serengeti & Chimps pairs chimps with the Serengeti over 11 days for $10,660.

For the beach, Good-Value Migration, Crater & Zanzibar is 11 days at $10,400. Tanzania's Mnemba Private Island skips the safari altogether: 7 days on Zanzibar for $10,800. At the top, the Grumeti Reserves appear in two ultra-luxury trips, a 10-day one at $14,790 and the 14-day Tanzania & Kenya trip at $23,100.

Seasons and airstrips in the Serengeti

Tanzania National Parks' Serengeti brochure gives the park two seasons: rain from November to April and dry weather from May to October. The migration moves through both. UNESCO places the calving on the short-grass plains that straddle the Serengeti's boundary with the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Kenya's tourism board puts the river crossings into the Maasai Mara, across the border, from July to October.

An itinerary's airstrip names tell you which part of the park you'll be in. The brochure lists all-weather strips at Seronera in the center, Kusini in the south, Lobo in the east, Kirawira in the west, and Kogatende and Lamai in the north. Charters fly in from Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Mwanza, Musoma, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.

Don't plan around park fees from TANAPA's website yet. Its tariff page still carried a 2023/2024 schedule marked valid until June 2024 when we checked in November 2026, so ask Go2Africa what your quote includes.

Insurance and health rules

Since October 1, 2026, foreign visitors to mainland Tanzania have needed inbound travel insurance from the National Insurance Corporation (NIC), according to a notice from the Norwegian Embassy in Dar es Salaam. If you land in Zanzibar first, you buy it from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation instead. The same notice gives the price as $44 for up to 92 days of cover. You don't need two policies if you visit both the mainland and Zanzibar, and the notice exempts residents of East African Community and SADC countries.

Trips that also visit Kenya need Kenya's separate health insurance, required there since October 5, 2026. The CDC's Tanzania page lists malaria in all areas below 1,800 meters, and TANAPA's brochure puts the Serengeti between 1,100 and 2,000 meters. Tanzania doesn't ask for a yellow fever certificate if you fly in directly from the US. It does if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk, including a layover of more than 12 hours there, and the CDC recommends the vaccine for most of Kenya. That matters for the trips here that pair the Serengeti with the Masai Mara.

One trip in the table, East Africa's Kenya, Tanzania & Uganda & Gorillas Safari, also goes to Uganda, where Go2Africa's page lists gorilla trekking in Bwindi. The State Department has had Uganda at Level 4, "Do Not Travel", since an advisory issued June 4, 2026, and the CDC's Uganda page carries a Level 2 "practice enhanced precautions" notice for Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease, updated August 28, 2026.

When do the wildebeest calve, and when do they cross the Mara River?

UNESCO places the calving on the short-grass plains along the Serengeti's boundary with the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Kenya's tourism board puts the Mara River crossings into the Maasai Mara from July to October.

What is the Serengeti's dry season?

May to October, according to Tanzania National Parks. The rains run from November to April.

Do I need insurance to enter Tanzania?

Yes, since October 1, 2026. You buy a $44 policy from Tanzania's National Insurance Corporation if you enter through the mainland, or from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation if you land in Zanzibar first. One policy covers both and lasts up to 92 days.

Is there malaria on a Tanzania safari?

The CDC lists malaria in every part of Tanzania below 1,800 meters. The Serengeti lies between 1,100 and 2,000 meters, so ask a travel clinic about malaria tablets.
