Cheap flights to Islamabad from the US and Canada: fares, routes and going north
What round trips to Islamabad cost from US and Canadian cities on November 2, 2026, why so many flights land before dawn, and how to reach Gilgit and Skardu when Canada's advice rules out the road.
On November 2, 2026, the cheapest round trip to Islamabad in our travel partner's fare data was $680 from New York, sold by Qatar Airways for March 5 to April 2, 2027, with one stop each way. From Toronto, one fare broke the pattern: CA$1,154 in late March. Every other Toronto fare was a Christmas trip at more than twice that. Islamabad International (ISB) is the capital's airport and the place to change for the short flights to Gilgit and Skardu. If you're still deciding between Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, our guide to cheap flights to Pakistan compares them.
What Islamabad fares cost
Here's what round trips cost in that data, by departure city, for travel between November 2026 and April 2027.
| From | Lowest seen | Typical | Month of lowest |

| New York | $680 | $990 | March 2027 |
| Washington, DC | $859 | $939 | November 2026 |
| Chicago | $870 | $978 | February 2027 |
| Dallas-Fort Worth | $896 | too few fares | December 2026 |
| Boston | $1,101 | too few fares | November 2026 |
| From | Lowest seen | Typical | Month of lowest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toronto | CA$1,154 | CA$2,570 | March 2027 |
| Calgary | CA$1,693 | CA$1,703 | March 2027 |
"Lowest seen" is the cheapest round trip we found from each city. "Typical" is the median of that city's fares, shown where there were at least three. US fares are in US dollars and Canadian fares in Canadian dollars. All come from our travel partner's fare data on November 2, 2026, for travel between November 2026 and April 2027. They aren't live quotes, and they change daily.
Chicago had the most Islamabad fares, 13 of them, and a typical round trip of $978. Its cheapest, $870 on Etihad for February 9 to 22, 2027, came in under New York's typical $990. Washington's best was $859 on Turkish Airlines, November 15 to December 8. Houston had no Islamabad fares at all, and neither did Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, Phoenix or Detroit.
From Toronto, the CA$1,154 fare, sold by Qatar Airways for March 25 to April 14, 2027, had one stop going out and two coming back. The four other Toronto fares were all sold by Air Canada, with two stops each way, leaving between December 22 and 25 and costing CA$2,490 to CA$2,956. Those four set the "typical" CA$2,570, so it tells you what Christmas costs, not March. Calgary's three fares all had two stops each way; the cheapest, CA$1,693 sold by WestJet, was for March 8 to 31.
One more thing about that $680 New York trip: March 5 to April 2 is exactly four weeks. Stay longer than four weeks and you'll have to show proof of a polio vaccine, given within the 12 months before you leave, on the yellow International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis, according to Canada's advice for Pakistan.
No nonstops from the US
We searched New York, Chicago, Houston and Washington for nonstop fares and found none. Most one-stop fares from the US were sold by Qatar Airways, Etihad, Emirates and Turkish Airlines. JetBlue and EgyptAir sold New York trips with two stops on the way out. The quickest New York fare, on Etihad, added up to about 37 and a half hours of travel for the round trip, so roughly 19 hours each way.
From Toronto, PIA's nonstop to Islamabad showed up once: CA$3,463 for December 24, 2026 to January 8, 2027, about 27 hours of flying for the round trip. For those exact dates, a two-stop fare sold by Air Canada cost CA$2,490. That's CA$973 less, for about 36 more hours in transit. Our Toronto to Pakistan guide compares Toronto fares to all three cities, with PIA's nonstops beside the connecting fares.
Landing at ISB before dawn
Many flights from the Gulf and Istanbul land in the small hours. On the airport's own arrivals board for November 7, 2026, Emirates from Dubai was due at 1:30 a.m., Qatar Airways from Doha at 1:40, Etihad from Abu Dhabi at 3:15 and Turkish Airlines from Istanbul at 4:45. Each had a second arrival later that day, between 7:15 a.m. and 6:10 p.m.
ISB isn't in Islamabad proper. According to the airport's own history page, it was inaugurated on April 20, 2018, after the old terminal, later named Benazir Bhutto International, had become too small. Its address is in Attock district, Punjab. Since April 18, 2022, an Orange Line metro bus has linked it to the city. When trial runs began that month, the state news agency APP reported a 25.6 km track from Peshawar Mor, with seven stations. A June 2026 report on Pakistan by the European Union Agency for Asylum still lists that line, along with buses and vans.
The airport's own page on buses and vans says they run round the clock, then advises tourists and newcomers to hire a taxi instead. Canada's advice goes further: arrange to be met at the airport, especially after dark. With those four landing before 5 a.m., that means family at the curb or a car booked before you fly, with your flight number on the booking so the driver can follow a delay. Our airport transfers guide covers meet-and-greet bookings and what to check before you pay.
Two more rules come from the airport itself. Its passenger guidelines say liquor is confiscated in the arrival lounge, so duty-free alcohol bought on the way won't get through. Its arrivals page says to report a missing bag to the airline straight away, and that claims for damage must be made within 7 days.
Gilgit and Skardu: fly, and leave spare days
Canada says do not travel by road to Gilgit-Baltistan, and to avoid all travel on the Karakoram Highway between Mansehra and Chilas. That leaves the flights from Islamabad. The departures board for November 7, 2026 showed PIA to Gilgit at 7:00 and 11:10 a.m. and to Skardu at 7:30 a.m., and a second Skardu departure at 7:00 a.m., half an hour before PIA's. AirSial's booking page lists Skardu too.
Mountain weather cancels these flights. In early March 2024, Dawn reported that bad weather had cancelled PIA's flights between Islamabad and both towns, and that landslides had blocked the Karakoram Highway at several points. That June, Gilgit-Baltistan's chief minister wrote to the federal aviation minister about frequent PIA cancellations and delays on the same routes.
The timing looks easy on paper. On the November 7 board, return flights from Gilgit and Skardu were due in Islamabad between 10:20 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., and the Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad departures to the Gulf were due out between 3:15 and 4:35 a.m. But if the mountain flight is cancelled, you lose the day and the night flight with it. Keep a spare day in Islamabad before you fly home.
Peshawar, Azad Kashmir and the advisories
Peshawar has its own airport, but it's in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and both governments warn against going. The US State Department rates Pakistan Level 3, "Reconsider travel", and says do not travel to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including the former tribal areas, or to the immediate vicinity of the Line of Control. Canada says avoid all travel to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa except Haripur and Abbottabad districts, where it asks for a high degree of caution, and Chitral, where it says avoid non-essential travel. It also says avoid all travel to Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
Inside Islamabad, Canada's advice asks visitors to keep a low profile, avoid the Lal Masjid (the Red Mosque) and stay only in hotels with metal detectors and closed security perimeters. Canadians need a visa unless they hold a valid NICOP. Our Pakistan guide covers visas, NICOP and passports in full.
When to go
The Pakistan Meteorological Department's 1981 to 2010 averages, published by the World Meteorological Organization, show why spring and autumn are the easy months in Islamabad. June averages a high of 38.4°C (101°F). July and August bring 311 mm and 338 mm of rain, roughly 12 and 13 inches. January nights average 3.2°C (38°F). March and November sit in between, with average highs of 24.5°C (76°F) and 25.9°C (79°F).
