More African safari itineraries: gorillas, Zambia, Zimbabwe and beyond

Gorilla treks, the Zambezi parks and Mozambique's islands from Go2Africa's feed, with the permit prices and yellow fever rules that decide which trip fits.

Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River between Zimbabwe and Zambia

Go2Africa's feed lists 44 itineraries beyond Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa and Botswana. The cheapest is a gorilla trek at $4,056 per person, and the dearest is a Mozambique island stay at $68,000. The trips run 4 to 17 days, with a median of $9,885 over 10 days, and 23 start under $10,000. Their route summaries name 14 countries. Zambia (14 trips) and Mozambique (11) turn up most.

Gorilla trips: Uganda's permit costs $700 less than Rwanda's

The cheapest row in the whole table is a gorilla trip: Uganda's Luxury Gorilla Safari, 5 days from $4,056. The cheapest Rwanda trip is Affordable Rwanda Gorilla Trek: 4 days from $5,140, which is $1,084 more. Go2Africa's own trip pages flip that order. On November 7, 2026, the Uganda page showed $4,760 per person sharing for 2026 dates, and the Rwanda page $4,510 to $4,690 for 2027 dates.

For foreign visitors, Uganda's permit is $700 cheaper. The Rwanda Development Board charges foreigners $1,500 per person. In Uganda, the Uganda Wildlife Authority's tariff lists $800 for foreign non-residents, who can book only through a licensed tour operator. Both countries set the minimum age at 15, cap groups at 8 and allow one hour with the gorillas. The trip pages list permits and park fees as included.

Rwanda's tourism board, Visit Rwanda, counts 12 habituated families with 8 permits each, so 96 permits a day. Hikes there run from 30 minutes to four hours or more. In Uganda, treks last 2 to 7 hours, and Bwindi has four trekking sectors. A revised Uganda tariff for January 2027 to June 2028 keeps the $800 permit. It also adds a $600 low-season rate, which covers only April, May and November.

Both gorilla countries carry State Department warnings. On November 7, 2026, the department had Uganda at Level 4, "Do Not Travel", in an advisory issued June 4, 2026 that cites crime, health, terrorism and unrest. It says the US government has limited ability to give emergency consular help there because of the Ebola outbreak. Rwanda was at Level 3, "Reconsider Travel", issued the same day for crime, unrest and health risks. That advisory also says not to travel within 10 kilometers of Rwanda's border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The tourism board places the gorillas in a volcanic range that spans Rwanda, Uganda and the DRC, so ask how far your trek runs from that border.

The CDC's Uganda page carries a Level 2 "practice enhanced precautions" notice for Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease, updated August 28, 2026. It also says US citizens who were in Uganda within 21 days of arriving in the United States must enter through designated airports for enhanced screening. The CDC's Rwanda page lists no Ebola notice.

Go2Africa's own guide calls trekking a year-round activity and puts the most comfortable weeks in two dry spells, mid-December to February and June to September, though it warns of humidity and mud even then. In the Republic of Congo the gorillas are a different species. Adventurer Congo's Gorillas & Forest Experience, 8 days for $14,000, takes a two-hour flight from Brazzaville to Odzala-Kokoua National Park, where Go2Africa's page names them as western lowland gorillas.

The Zambezi and the walking parks

Eight trip names mention the Falls or Livingstone. The cheapest is a 7-day Livingstone and Lower Zambezi River trip at $5,000, and the dearest is Luxury Kruger, Livingstone & South Luangwa at $18,600. UNESCO gives the falls a width of 1,708 meters and up to 500 million liters a minute, and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority recommends February to May, right after the summer rains.

For walking, look at South Luangwa. The 8-day South Luangwa's 4x4, Walking & Bike Safari, at $6,200, lists twice-daily walks between three camps on Go2Africa's page, one of them across the river in a part of the park set aside for walking safaris alone. Go2Africa calls Kafue Zambia's oldest and largest national park, and its 10-day Kafue itinerary at $4,200 uses under-canvas camps.

Mozambique: where the table gets expensive

Eleven trips name Mozambique, and all list the Bazaruto Archipelago. Eight of the 11 also list South Africa, and seven of the trip names include Kruger. Two pair Mozambique with Botswana, and one is the island on its own. They start at $6,600 for the 11-day Cape Town & Mozambique and climb to $68,000 for the 7-day Luxury Benguerra Island Holiday.

Go2Africa's own page for that stay lists six nights at Azura Benguerra, reached by helicopter from Vilanculos. On November 7, 2026, it showed $8,710 to $9,430 per person sharing, nowhere near the feed's $68,000.

Malawi, the Seychelles, Namibia and Madagascar

Four trips name Lake Malawi. Two stay in Malawi: the 11-day Malawi Highlands, Park & Lake at $6,000, and a 9-day Liwonde Safari & Likomo Island trip at $6,800. The other two add South Luangwa: Family Zambia & Malawi (9 days, $4,100) and Zambia's Community & Conservation Safari (10 days, $9,600). Three trips name the Seychelles, at $4,400 to $14,300. The $4,400 and $14,300 trips, both 10 days, list only islands in their route summaries. Family Kenya & Seychelles, 11 days at $10,700, pairs Mahe with the Masai Mara.

The longest trip is Botswana, Zimbabwe & Namibia, 17 days for $11,100. Go2Africa's page opens in the Okavango Delta, crosses to Victoria Falls from Kasane, then drives Namibia through Windhoek, Swakopmund, Sossusvlei, Damaraland and Etosha. The second-dearest row, 11-Day South Luangwa & Madagascar at $32,000, spends five nights on an island off Madagascar before moving to Zambia.

Malaria and yellow fever

The CDC shows malaria in all areas of Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique and recommends tablets. Yellow fever has the clearest rule. Uganda requires the certificate from every arriving traveler aged 1 and older, as of the CDC's April 23, 2025 update. Rwanda does not require it for direct travel from the US, but does for travelers arriving from countries with risk, so a route that crosses between the two needs a check before you book.

Kigali's typical lowest round trip from US cities was $1,270 in our travel partner's fare data on November 2, 2026. Our page on cheap flights to Africa has the full table. To compare these trips with the big four, see all 149 African safari itineraries.
