South Africa is one of the longest trips you can book from the US, about 15 hours nonstop from Atlanta to Johannesburg, and the passport rule catches people at the end of it. You need two consecutive completely blank visa pages, and the State Department says you'll be denied entry without them. Check that before you look at fares.

Johannesburg or Cape Town?

Johannesburg (JNB), O.R. Tambo International, is the main hub and the usual gateway for Kruger, the northeastern safari areas and flights on to Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia. Cape Town (CPT) is the gateway for the city, the winelands and the Garden Route.

In our travel partner's fare data on November 2, 2026, Johannesburg was cheaper: $677 from New York, against $1,094 to Cape Town. Domestic flights between the two take about two hours, so price an open-jaw ticket, into one city and home from the other, against a plain round trip. It saves flying back across the country.

Lowest seen is the cheapest round trip we found from each city; typical is the middle of all the fares we found from it, shown where there were at least three. These are recently found prices in our travel partner's fare data on November 2, 2026, for travel between November 2026 and mid-2027. They are not live quotes and they change daily.

Atlanta, Delta's nonstop hub, had the highest Johannesburg fare in our data, $1,821, and only a few fares. The cheapest trips from New York and Dallas were for April 2027, after the southern summer peak.

The nonstop routes

Five nonstop routes link the two countries. Delta flies from Atlanta to Johannesburg and to Cape Town, and United flies from Newark to both cities and from Washington Dulles to Cape Town. The airlines move flights between Johannesburg and Cape Town by season, adding Cape Town flights in the southern summer. In June 2026 a Delta executive told TimesLive that the air services agreement allows 23 weekly flights between the countries and that all of them were in use, so seats on these routes are limited.

Nonstops save hours but rarely have the lowest fares. Most of the cheapest trips in our data had one stop each way, in Europe, Istanbul, the Gulf, Addis Ababa or Nairobi. On a trip this long, a connection can also break up the journey; our tips on arriving rested after a long-haul flight help with either choice.

When to go

Seasons are the reverse of North America's. Cape Town's summer, from about December to February, is warm, dry and the busiest time, with the highest prices around Christmas and New Year. Its winter, from June to August, is cooler, wetter and quieter.

For safari in Kruger and the northeast, the dry months from about May to September are usually best, as the bush thins out and animals gather near water. A trip in the shoulder months, April or May and September or October, can combine the Cape with a safari.

Planning a safari

Safaris are usually planned around the lodges and parks first, with small-plane flights and transfers fitted around them. If you'd rather have a specialist put that part together, Go2Africa tailor-makes safaris in South Africa and across the region.

Entry rules

US citizens don't need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days, according to South Africa's Department of Home Affairs. South Africa launched an electronic travel authorization in August 2026, but it's voluntary for visa-exempt travelers, so Americans don't need one.

The passport rules are strict. The State Department says your passport must be valid for 30 days after you leave South Africa and must have two consecutive completely blank visa pages on arrival. Pages marked for endorsements don't count.

Children traveling with their parents need only a valid passport, under the rules Home Affairs set out in its advisory on minors. Children traveling alone need more: a copy of the birth certificate, consent letters from the parents and a letter from the person meeting them.

Health

The CDC's South Africa page says you don't need a yellow fever certificate if you fly in directly from the US. You do if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk, and that includes airport layovers of more than 12 hours there, so check before booking a long stop in Addis Ababa or Nairobi. The same page covers malaria precautions for the Kruger area.

Safety

The State Department rates South Africa Level 2, "Exercise increased caution", because of crime, terrorism, unrest and kidnapping. Its advisory says violent crime is more common in the downtown areas of big cities after dark, warns of "smash-and-grab" attacks on cars, and says kidnappers target US citizens to force cash withdrawals. Keep bags out of sight in a car, and don't walk city centers at night.

Two recent consulate alerts are worth knowing. At Cape Town's airport, people posing as Uber or taxi drivers wait near the ground-floor exit and charge extremely high fares, so the October 6 alert says to use the app pickup area on the ground floor of Parkade 1. In Durban, the consulate reported looting and violence targeting foreign nationals in the central business district in early October.
