Nearly every trip from the US to Ghana lands at Kotoka International (ACC) in Accra, and New York had both the lowest fare and the most fares in our travel partner's data on November 2, 2026. The one document people forget is the yellow fever certificate: Ghana asks every arriving traveler for it, and since mid-October there's a yellow fever outbreak in the Upper West Region too.

Lowest seen is the cheapest round trip we found from each city; typical is the middle of all the fares we found from it, shown where there were at least three. These are recently found prices in our travel partner's fare data on November 2, 2026, for travel between November 2026 and mid-2027. They are not live quotes and they change daily.

New York's lowest fare was $626, but its typical fare was $1,066, so the cheap ones were particular dates. Washington, DC and Chicago weren't far behind New York at the low end. Fares from Dallas, Los Angeles and Atlanta started much higher, so if you live in the South or West, compare a search from home with one from New York or Washington, plus the cost of getting there.

Nonstop or one stop

Delta flies daily between New York (JFK) and Accra, a trip of about ten hours. United flew from Washington Dulles five times a week last summer. Over the holidays Delta adds a seasonal Atlanta flight; the airline-schedule site Aeroroutes lists it from at least December 1, 2026 to January 17, 2027.

Other trips connect in a European hub or in Istanbul, Casablanca, Addis Ababa or a Gulf city, and the lowest fares in our data had one stop each way. Keep a connecting trip on one ticket: if a late first flight makes you miss the second, the airline normally rebooks you, which separate tickets don't promise; our guide to layovers covers how much time to leave.

December in Accra

Since the Year of Return campaign in 2019, the weeks around Christmas and New Year have drawn large numbers of visitors from the diaspora for concerts, festivals and family events, and flights and hotels fill early. In our data, Atlanta's only fares were for December, at $1,373, while New York's lowest was a February trip. If you want to be there for the season, book months ahead. If you mainly want a good fare, look at January to March instead.

It's warm all year. In the south, December to March is the drier season, with dusty harmattan winds in some years.

The visa and the yellow fever certificate

US citizens need a visa for Ghana, arranged before you travel. Ghana launched an online e-visa system in May 2026, but when we checked, official sources didn't say clearly which route and fee apply to a US passport, so start with the Embassy of Ghana in Washington. Unofficial visa websites charge extra, so check the address before you pay. If you're also a Ghanaian citizen, ask the embassy which passport to travel on.

The CDC's Ghana page says proof of yellow fever vaccination is required from every arriving traveler aged 9 months or older, wherever you fly from. Get the vaccine at least 10 days before you go, keep the yellow certificate with your passport, and ask a travel clinic about malaria tablets at the same visit. On October 16, 2026 the CDC also posted a notice about a yellow fever outbreak in the Upper West Region, in the far north.

What the advisory says

The State Department rates Ghana Level 2, "Exercise increased caution", in an advisory reissued on July 7, 2026. It cites crime, poor health infrastructure, violence against women, and violence against lesbian and gay travelers. It says to reconsider travel to the northern border in the Upper East, Northeast and Upper West regions, and west of the N12 highway in the Savannah Region. The US Embassy's summary has the full text. Accra, Cape Coast, Elmina and Kumasi are all well away from those areas.

Beyond Accra

Cape Coast and Elmina, a few hours west along the coast, are the most popular trips out of the city, for their castles, museums and beaches. Kumasi, the Ashanti capital, is a short domestic flight from Accra or a long day by road. Fix your international dates first, then plan these legs, and leave the first day after a long-haul arrival free.

For the first night, a pre-booked ride from the airport saves negotiating at the curb; our guide to airport transfers covers how they work.
